January of 2011, the State of California instituted new driving laws. These new CA driving laws will become a pain for many drivers and motorcycle riders and confusing to others who have no interest in being New Traffic Lawsupdated on anything. With your indulgence let’s list some new laws that may, at the very least, save you some of those green pieces of paper with dead presidents on the front.Change #1Motorcycle License Applicants. California has it’s share of bikers however, under the new driving laws, if an applicant is under 21 and applying for a motorcycle license they must complete an approved motorcycle training class before applying for a permit then wait six months before receiving an actual license.Change #2CarPool Lanes-SB 535. Under the new CA driving laws if you’re colorblind you may be digging into your cash reserves and paying fines if you own a hybrid vehicle. Single person drivers in hybrid cars with a DMV-issued yellow carpool sticker Using HOV lanes expired July 1, 2011. However, it allows certain plug-in hybrids and electric cars to continue to use the HOV lanes from January 1, 2012 to January 1, 2015 with only a single driver. White HOV carpool stickers using regular gas are good to go until January 1, 2015.

Change #3Mobile BillBoard Advertising Displays-AB 2756. Any advertising type of display attached to any non-motorized mode of transportation like a bicycle for the express purpose of advertising a specific product may be removed or towed when left standing or parked.

Change #4Motorcycle Exhaust Systems-SB 435. Effective January 1, 2013, as per Environmental Protection Agency guidelines it will be illegal to operate or park any motorcycle registered in California not having the exhaust system label attached per Federal regulations.

Change #5Drunk Drivers-AB 1601. If you booze and get caught on a DUI, expect your license to be revoked up to 10 years if previously convicted of three or more DUIs in that period.

Change #6Higher Traffic Fines-AB 2173. Moving violation tickets will be bumped up by $4 until January, 2016.
